The Inevitable Hazards When Working in a Construction Site

There are many unavoidable hazards when working on a construction site that leave workers open to injuries and casualties. Having to work with large equipment, tools, and materials can leave the workers open to slipping and falling, tripping over debris, and getting head injuries. Here are some of the most common hazards workers encounter when working in a construction site.

Heavy Equipment Hazards

One of the common hazards found in construction sites is working with heavy equipment. If not handled properly, this equipment will cause severe injury, or in some cases, even death. Heavy equipment that uses high heat or electrical charges will put the workers at risk for electrocution or severe burns.

Other heavy equipment may have sharp blades that can cause deep lacerations or even loss of fingers or limbs. Another risk of working with heavy equipment is the danger of workers being crushed by the equipment itself.

Hazards from Debris

Debris left in job sites poses serious risk for injury. If a job site has not been maintained and kept clean, debris can be the cause for severe falls or severe head trauma. Usually, fallen debris comes from unsecured scaffolding or the negligence of other workers. Injuries caused by debris can be as simple as small bruises to large and severe injuries like head and neck trauma and broken bones.

Height Hazards

Working at heights is also a hazard when workers are not wearing proper safety harnesses or not working on secure scaffolding. If a worker trips or falls over debris and they are not wearing the right safety measures, they could have a fatal fall.

Sometimes these falls are at no fault of the worker and are a result of the employer’s negligence. In this scenario, it would be beneficial to call and talk with a New York construction accident lawyer to see if there is any compensation due. A reputable construction accident lawyer will be able to see if there was in fact any negligence on the part of the employer and discuss the employee’s rights and the employer’s responsibilities regarding the accident.

Ladder Hazards

Every year, thousands of construction workers are exposed to injuries from the improper use of ladders in job sites. From damaged ladders to using the wrong types of ladders, ladder accidents can result to severe injuries or even death of workers. If an employer has provided a faulty ladder and you experience an injury from it, it is important to immediately consult a construction accident lawyer to know your legal rights in relation to the accident.

Accidents from work are inevitable. However, the suffering and anxiety brought by accidents at work should not be prolonged. Get the help of a legal expert to fight for your rights and receive the proper recompense from your employers.

Setting Up an Intervention

Television ofter glamorizes the idea of setting up an intervention for a loved one. In films and other sitcoms it seems that things always come around and everything works out in the end. However, this is a much more difficult option when it comes to really sitting someone that you love and care about down and letting them know that you have concerns. You don’t want them to feel trapped or cornered and you want to make sure that the overall message is that people love and care about him or her.

Consider meeting with a professional to prepare for something like this. An expert might be able to give you some ideas on what types of things work well and others that are just going to push the persona farther away. Remember that while you may think that by doing this you love them enough to tell them, that isn’t necessarily the way that they might be hearing your words. For some, this is their only chance of being able to start the process of change. You want to try your best to be successful the first time.

Ask a professional to be there for support. This might be easier if there is a person already in your family’s life that has any type of experiences in these types of situations. If this just isn’t something that is going to work, think about people that you know that have been able to make a change in their lives. Is there something that has been able to get clean and move on with their life? If so, think about whether or not this person would be someone that would be able to bring something positive to the table.

Numbers of At-Risk Youth are on the Rise

In Nebraska, studies done by Kids Count report finding that one in ten children are suffering from one kind of behavioral problem or another. Sadly, 26% of them are in foster homes with around 70 percent being in the children’s justice program, and numbers that are too big for kids that drop out or are born into poverty.
Melissa Breazile coordinates research for VOCN (Voices for Children in Nebraska), and she reports that successful graduations have risen in number, and the rates for dropping out and getting expelled have decreased some. All the while, poverty and the problems that come with it are on a rise, too.
Mental Health Problems Affect Needy Family’s Issues

The report with results for this year are taken from data collected from 2008 and 2009; the two most recent complete years they had information for. Back in 2000, the amount of needy children in Nebraska was at 10%. By the time 2009 rolled around, that figure rose to 15.2%. Nebraska’s highest poverty/lowest income rates are with children of color; 48.4% , along with 29% are Hispanic children, 34.5% are Native American children, and 11.2 are white children.
Children that are brought up in poverty have noticably been linked to being more of a risk than other children. This study suggests a multi-faceted reason; these children likely get poor quality child-care, attend school in unsafe neighborhoods and suffer with things like depression, abuse, exposure to ecological toxins, trauma, domestic violence and things like dealings with justice establishments and welfare programs.
Breazile said the same discrepancy plays a large part in behavioral health matters, whether there’s mental illness or substance abuse. Behavioral and addiction issues happen to people of all incomes without discretion, but financial status has everything to do with whether they get can help or not. It’s reported that 28% of underprivileged children need mental health care they cannot get.

Local Governments Need to Step up to the Plate for Vets

It’s not news that the VA doesn’t give military personnel the medical and mental health help they need. It’s been like this all along, but with recent cuts being made (in military spending, too) veterans are finding their health care at civilian practices.
However, the general public’s services for health and mental health care are not prepared to care for post-war military people. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is only scratching the surface of what can be wrong with our veterans when they come home.
For one, civilian doctors don’t all have an understanding of highly skilled people that were trained hard in hiding pain and tolerating illnesses; people that were taught not to ask for help. Doctors don’t know to bring this out or ask about the strain on military families and how/if their needs are being met.
The VA Offers Help That Many Don’t Have Access To

The VA has such a bad reputation for being of no help that people will continue to turn to the civilian medical institutions for their aches and pains, but mental disabilities and challenges go widely untreated. Just getting to the VA’s establishments can be a huge problem, as there aren’t facilities in every city. Some vets have to travel hours to the nearest VA clinic or hospital and some have physical limitations that make getting around difficult.
One thing that can be done toward bettering that, is by the federal government contracting with private doctors in every city who’ve been trained appropriately for the identification and treatment of issues for post-war vets.
The contracted doctors should also be aware of military culture and the fact that some self-medicate in an effort to feel better. Then we have addicted veterans who have little or no help. Local governments need to take greater responsibility for the citizens who give bodies and minds to war and civil unrest, and give those servants access to the help they desperately need.
